AVG Update Borks Windows 7, Here's How You Can Fix It

If you're an AVG user having trouble booting into Windows 7, you have our condolences. Perhaps it might come as a small consolation that you're not alone, and chances are you did nothing wrong. The culprit, AVG says, is that the latest virus database -- 271.1.1/3292 (432/3292) -- released earlier this week is bricking systems with a STOP code.

AVG has since pulled the update, but that doesn't do you any good if you've already installed it. In that case, AVG recommends booting into Safe Mode and running System Restore to a point in time prior to the update. Barring that, AVG says to do the following:

1. Find a working computer and create an AVG Rescue CD, if you didn't already, and use it to boot into your computer.
2. When the Rescue CD is launched, navigate to Utilities > File Manager.
3. Navigate to the mounted system drive (usually /mnt/sda1).
4. Within this drive, navigate to the /Windows/system32/drivers/ folder and rename (using the F6 key) all files starting with avg (such as avgldx86.sys, avgtdlx.sys, and any others you find) to back them up. You can do this by changing their file extension to .bak.
5. Remove the Rescue CD and reboot your PC. Your system should now boot with AVG disabled.
6. Re-install AVG.
Alternately, some AVG forum members recommend booting into Safe Mode with a command prompt and renaming/removing the AVG program folder. Doing so should allow you to boot normally, after which you can then run the repair installation of AVG.

Note that this issue only affects 64-bit versions of Windows. If you're running a 32-bit OS and can't boot up, the culprit is likely something else.

Windows 7 Phone Review

The Windows 7 Phone platform has just been released, and reviews across the internet have been published as publications try to give their two penny worth. The replacement for the much maligned and now defunct Windows Mobile, it will be available in the UK with the HTC HDZ and HTC 7 Mozart, Samsung Omnia, and LG Optimus 7.

Ballmer
Understandably first on most agendas of any article covering Windows new baby (which they are rumoured to spending a recession-mocking four hundred million pounds promoting), is its interface, and reactions to it have generally been positive. The Daily Telegraph describes it thus:
Turn on any WP7 device and the home screen slides up to reveal a panel of large icons. These give access to the “hubs” around which the system is built – from “People” to “Pictures” or “Music and Video”. Scroll up and as you come to the bottom of the list the icons above are compressed slightly; it makes knowing where you are in a list intuitive. Menus throughout the phone, too, pirouette onto the screen in a way that is as smooth-looking as it is surely battery-draining.

wmpoweruser.com likes the simplicity of the interface and its intention to keep things as quick and straightforward as possible:

Sometimes, the interface can be a little dull, and perhaps not as flashy as things like the iPhone, or Android, but it puts information, rather than shininess first, and at that, it’s pretty much unparalleled.

As we all know, apps now rule the mobile universe. Windows have recognised this and created the Marketplace, where users can go to pick up apps, games and music videos. They have brought a host of third developers on board, who will be bringing additions every day. About Marketplace, neowin.net said:

Microsoft’s store is a joy to use unless you’re searching for something specific. Hitting the search button allows you to narrow down your search but the final results mix in applications, games and music so it’s often hard to find the application you require.

As Apple as iTunes, so Windows has Zune to buy and play music which you can sync with your Windows PC. Unfortunately the Guardian has compared looking for songs on it to shopping in “a 1950s Soviet supermarket: damn big, and damn empty.”

However, neowin contradicts this by saying:
Overall the Music and Video hub offers everything you’d expect. Windows Phone 7 supports a variety of formats including MP3, WMA, AAC, MPEG and H.264. DivX and MKV formats are not supported natively but we fully expect third parties to offer separate applications for these.
Emails appear to be taken care off and the Phone 7 gets general thumbs up all round, with

wmpoweruser saying:
The Email client is pretty much spot on. It supports IMAP, POP, Hotmail/Live and Exchange ActiveSync push email, as well as full HTML support, and the interface is brilliant to boot.
It’ll also easily sync with your Facebook, with neowin gushing that “if ever there was a Facebook phone then this is truly it. Facebook is at the very heart of Windows Phone 7 and it beats throughout the operating system.”

Pictures from Facebook and email are easily retrievable, where “the hub syncs down your photos and albums from Facebook and Windows Live. The Facebook integration is solid in pictures, allowing you to save photos locally and comment on friends Facebook images.”
There’s full Microsoft Office capability, with techradar saying this is where Windows Phone 7 really shines, though it does say,

Being able to jump directly to tables in Excel or sections in Word, using the contents list Mobile Office builds automatically is certainly useful but we’d really like to see the other apps work more like OneNote, enabling you to have notes on your phone that sync to the Web and to the PC version of the app as well.

In general, opinions on the 7 Phone were pretty positive. Techradar (giving it four out of five) says:
Microsoft has delivered what it set out to do: a refreshingly different, truly engaging mobile OS. The user interface delights and there are standout innovations such as linking multiple contacts.
All the reviews do lend a caveat that it isn’t yet the finished article, and that it offers little new for smartphones with Telegraph perhaps summing it up with:
Everything looks genuinely slick and stylish – but WP7 is neither cutting edge under the bonnet nor so effortless to use that it’s a plausible object of aspiration for anybody but a business person whose IT department won’t allow them a better option.

Windows 7 Vs Windows Vista

Windows 7 is almost here, with most PC and Laptop manufacturers starting to ship Windows 7 at the end of this month. We thought we would have a quick look at Microsoft’s new Operating System to see if improvements have been made from the much maligned Vista system.

A first impression if you are coming from Windows XP is that Windows 7 is glossier. It is also something of a step forward for Microsoft into the 21st Century. If you have used Vista, than you will be happy as Microsoft has taken great pains to put right the problems users had with Vista.

For a start Windows 7 will run faster on the same hardware as Vista. This is the first time this has happened with a new release of Windows. You will also find that most software doesn’t have a problem running on it as it’s based on the Vista system. Gladly it doesn’t seem to have the hardware driver problems that haunted Vista when it was first released.

Windows 7 also has a nice new interface and a better search facility. It now offers floating widgets rather than the side bar from Vista and a Calculator that you can actually use.

Home Group allows you to easily set-up a home workgroup to share files and printers and there is a 'Virtual Environment' option which allows you to run XP applications on it should the need arise. Wireless network switching is also easier.

If you are looking for a lot of new extras you may be disappointed. Microsoft has gone for the safe option of just putting right, what was wrong in Vista.

On the down side the control panel is very messy and hard to navigate. It also comes with Internet Explorer 8 so you may find yourself upgrading to Firefox, Chrome or Opera quite quickly. In fact if you upgrade from Windows XP you will get asked which browser you wish to use.

On the whole Windows 7 seems to have a put Microsoft back in the right direction and a lot of users will be breathing a sigh of relief. So overall don’t be too afraid when someone offers you Windows 7 on your new PC, you will be pleasantly surprised with the latest instalment.

Windows 7 Shut Down - Know How to Fix your PC Instantly!

Windows 7 is a very advanced and up-to-date system which has become extremely popular since its launch - but many people are now discovering that this system is prone to shutting down randomly, leading you to lose data and unsaved games. This issue is very common and extremely damaging to your PC, and here's how to fix your PC instantly!

One of the biggest causes of this problem is down to overheating. Computers are a lot like cars - they continually get hot and have to be cooled. It's often the case that if you're using your computer too much or are restricting the airflow inside it, then it can become overheated and just shut down. To fix this, if you have a laptop then place the laptop onto a desk or flat surface to make sure that all the air can get to it as designed. If you have a desktop, then you should take the side case off the computer and use a fan to blow cool air at your system. If your computer is overheating, this solution should solve it.

However, there's a much more common cause of random computer shut downs which many people don't even know about - the "registry" of Windows. The registry is a database which Windows uses to store information and settings for inside your PC. It's basically like the "Yellow Pages" of your system, as its where Windows keeps many different pieces of information that it calls whenever it needs to. Unfortunately, the registry database is a constant cause of errors for the Windows system, as it's forever being saved in the wrong way.

Each time you use Windows, it's constantly saving a lot of the vital registry settings your computer needs incorrectly, causing your computer to become extremely unstable and unreliable. As Windows needs to use a lot of registry settings each time you use it, if any of these are damaged, corrupted or unreadable, your system is going to run slower and with a series of errors. However, if the setting is so important that Windows is unable to run without it... and it cannot read that setting... you're either going to get the "blue screen error" or your PC is just going to shut down.

To fix this cause of the problem, you can actually use a 'registry cleaner' to fix the various damaged parts of the registry that could be causing your system to run slower. A registry cleaner is a software tool that's designed to scan through the central registry database of your PC and fix any of the damaged or corrupt settings that are inside it. This means that if your computer has any damaged or corrupt registry settings, using one of these tools will make it much more reliable and stable.

Computer Operating Systems

Unix like Operating Systems
We are all aware of the fact that Unix is an open source operating system. By open source, we mean that its source code is kept free for changes. No doubt, for a full version Linux, you will need to have the license key from the vendor from whom you are getting the operating system. There are various vendors like Red Hat, Fedora, etc. who design Linux operating system.

History of Computer Operating Systems - Unix

Unix operating system is designed by many vendors today. However, the success of UNIX can be many attributed to the AT&T's Bell Laboratories from where it was desiged and released in 1970's. By the end of the 1970's most people who had done pioneering work in the success of this operating system were holding important positions in the computer world. They insisted on using UNIX. Educational institutions, Government bodies and electronic companies, all continued to use Unix. This led to various vendors entering into this market and producing their own versions of Unix. In 1980, 'The Open Group' or X/Open Company Ltd. was formed by a group of vendors to limit the encroachment by larger companies who wanted to control the system interface. Open Systems had to meed specific standards and Unix system was chosen as the platform for the open systems. In 1993, AT&T sold its Unix System Laboratories to Novell and in 1995, SCO bought the same from Novell. In 1995 X/Open introduced the Unix 95 brand for computer systems. It was meant to guarantee the Single Unix specification.

Find Latest News of Windows 7

windows 7 antispyware
Windows 7 is a benchmark in the software development history of Microsoft. It has been designed with acute sharpness to deliver qualitative performance in a best and secure way. Since its launch on 22nd October, last year, it has earned net revenue of $6.66 billion approximately, which is many folds higher than Windows Vista.

Feature, usability and recommendation
From my prospective, Windows 7 update is an important option, which has been included for the smooth performance of your operating system, dependent application software and peripheral devices, such as printer and scanner.
I faced the most difficult situation in my computing life, when I found my computer equipped with Windows 7 in an absolute “no boot” condition. It was showing software conflicts repeatedly. But once I updated the Microsoft’s applications with the latest patches available on its website, I got everything resolved.
But things were not so easier, if I had not kept my Windows update enabled. From Windows update I came to know about the latest patch for my computer’s operating system and other application software and when I implemented those updates I got my computer back in sound condition.

Hence, Windows 7 update is essential to maintain the performance and security of computer. It dedicatedly searches for the latest available patch required for loaded operating system and application software.
Microsoft is still working to energize its latest Windows 7 operating system. There is a news is in the air about development of an update patch known as Service Pack 1 or SP1, which is expected to be available around September 2010.
So, the best thing is to keep your Windows updated with latest patch via Windows update option, which is not a bit difficult. It can be done as, Click Start > Control Panel>System and Security>Windows Update. Click OK to apply it finally.
Limitation
Running a computer is always at a risk if you don’t update your computer on regular basis, there can be risk of hardware failure/computer crash or stealing of important personal details through spyware or adware. So never compromise and get the best update from Microsoft’s website.

Conclusion
Over and all Microsoft has done a great job with the introduction of self update feature in latest Windows 7. It helps to get quick and automatic access to latest update available from manufacturer and hence you

Good Experience with Windows 7 Professional

Features
After experimenting with a series of operating system form Microsoft and others, I have concluded that there is no alternative for Windows 7 Professional in the present date. Once, I had installed it I took a sigh of relief as it is much stable and user-friendly and miles away from software conflictions. I am pretty much sure that its features, like JumpList, Aero, HomeGroup, Domain Join and XP Mode are enough to challenge any OS.
Usability
Windows 7 Professional has simplified my task. Now, I can easily connect my PCs at home to share files, music, video and even my printer without any hassle. Earlier, it was never possible without help of technicians. In addition, I can maintain my privacy too with the password protection feature. I don’t face difficulty while working with multiple Windows because Aero Shake minimizes unessential applications within an eye blink by just shaking them with the mouse. I can access file located in remote section of my computer network easily and quickly with smart search of Windows Search option. When I just enter an alphabet in the search box, it gives a list of relevant files. It was never so easy with Windows Vista’s “Instant Search.” With the Tab Group feature in Internet Explorer you can easily manage multiple tabs, which was not possible in earlier versions of IE. Hence, it’s a totally a never-before experience with Windows 7 Professional.
Limitation
Although, I have a good experience with Windows 7 Professional, but I think Microsoft should have been a bit liberal with the users on the compatibility front. I faced issues while doing custom install on one of my old computer. It showed software conflicts a number of times, when I had to do install device drivers.
Conclusion:
Above and all, Windows 7 professional is a good presentation from Microsoft. There are some new features, which will be soon adaptable for me. I liked it mostly on account of its enhanced performance with least of software conflicts and strong security features, which were tough challenge in earlier versions.

How to create backup in windows 7

data back up in Windows 7Create copies of data files and system image which includes system settings, programs and files with Windows Backup. Choose custom location in Windows 7 for data backup. You can check for this option under System and Security in your Control Panel and can also access it through Action Center.

Some vital functionality was missing in Windows Vista which Microsoft has tried to cover up in Windows 7. Windows 7 has build on the new features in Windows Vista Backup. Windows 7 provides you with in-built tool to back up your data. Microsoft has introduced consolidated Backup and restore Center in Windows Vista but Windows 7 has in-built backup center. It’s in-built “Shadow Copy” feature restores the previous versions of files and folders and makes repetitious backups when required, if certain part of the file has been changed then it only transfer that part and copy it over.

Backup and Restore Center will show you the backup device you have selected, the space left on it, the space occupied by windows Backup and how far you are into the process if you are currently running a backup. Windows 7 backup facilitates you by providing access to your previous system image files for deletion, it also displays how much space is being used by each of its backup components.

Try the following steps to create backup:

1 Start the process of creating a backup from the Backup and restore center in the Control Panel.

2 Choose the location where you want to create your backup.

3 Network location can be selected to create backup. Add your network path by clicking Add New Location.

4 Choose what to backup, once you have chosen the location.

5 You can choose your own files as well as Windows chosen file.

6 Start backup process. the Backup and Restore center notifies that backup is in progress.

7 Restore the files once backup process is over.

But it is far more easier to backup your files over the network, if you are using Professional or Ultimate edition of Windows 7 then you need not keep the drives as you also have the option of backing up your files to a network.

You can set up your network to save the copies of critical files. It will surely proved to be a worthwhile investment as a Home Network backup can easily maintain the copies of the electronic data files thus securing the data in case of theft, disaster and computer failures. You have the option to choose from online service or Home Network backup. There are different methods using which you can set your data on Home Computer Network such as backups to CD-ROM or DVD-ROM discs, network backups to a local server and online backups to a remote hosting service.

In network backup to a local server you don’t require to burn several disks considering setting up a backup server on your home network. A backup server has a large hard disk drive and network to receive other home network files. In Network backup to a Remote Hosting Service many Internet sites offer backup hosting services which results in automatic network backups.

All these features help the user to have the full control over the flies which are backed up and you can have automatic backup capability with suitable software in Local Servers Backup. In Remote Hosted Backup your data is saved with lower risk from theft.

MUI for Windows 7

Multilingual User InterfaceBased on your company's current geographic and IT infrastructure, you need to determine your language and country/region requirements, as well as your hardware requirements and limitations to deploy the appropriate language configurations of Windows 7 and configure country/region support.

You will also need to:

* Determine the roaming user needs in your organization.
* Evaluate the hardware requirements for multilingual support.
* Determine whether your organization will need to deploy a single global image or specific country/region builds for different offices in your organization.

Assessing hardware requirements for multilingual support
Supporting multiple languages can impact your hardware requirements in two areas:
Hard disk space: Some languages require more hard-disk storage space than others. The more languages installed on a computer, the more hard-disk space consumed.
Specialized hardware devices: Some languages or users require special keyboards, IMEs, or alternative input devices.

Determining the requirement of language and country/region
If you have polyglot office environments or you do business in multiple languages then you need to know which languages or bids your organization requires. Also you need to know that whether these languages require input devices or input method editors (IMEs).

You must determine whether currency, time zone, or calendar formats vary between the different countries/regions if you do business on international level. Additionally, you must determine which line-of-business applications you have that must accommodate such country/region differences.

A four-column planning table can help you determine your language and country/region needs. You can organize the table as follows:

* In column one, list your offices or divisions.

* In column two, list the languages or dialects used in those offices or divisions.

* In column three, note the corresponding Windows 7 language collections and locales that support those languages or dialects. For tables listing Windows 7 language packs and settings, see Supported Language Packs and Default Settings.

* In column four, note special standards and format settings, input language support, or default languages for non-Unicode programs required for your offices or divisions.

So, as release date of Windows 7 is close, we find ourselves with revolutionary and new Microsoft OS: Windows 7. Windows 7 seems poised to succeed where Vista couldn’t as it is built on the latest technologies introduced with Vista, but with a renewed focus on performance and compatibility. We’ve finally received a final build of Windows 7 and have run it through the wringer in both the Lab and in the real-world. Here’s what we found.
